Specifications

Section 1. Context of the best practice: frame conditions (natural and human environment)

Short description of the best practice

The best practice is a research into impact of RNA on household economies (including agriculture and animal husbandry) in 4 locations in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.   Implementation of Assisted Natural Regeneration (RNA) by households and communities is partly determined by property rights (so land rights) of households and communities. RNA means investment in e.g. stone rows, that promotes water infiltration and up growth of vegetation. RNA means protecting upcoming vegetation.|

Location

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger|

Brief description of the natural environment within the specified location.

RNA contributes to improving soil fertility by promoting fertilising trees and composting and improving availability of manure by strengthening animal husbandry
no specific information available
Was not part of the research, but RNA certainly has climate impacts as it strengthens the capacity of households to resist droughts, hungry periods by restoring vegetation and diversifying livelihoods

Prevailing socio-economic conditions of those living in the location and/or nearby

Households and communities have property rights (so land rights.
RNA contributes to improving households revenues by increasing cereal yields, revenues form animal husbandry (e.g. countering slump prices in the dry season) and  revenues from herbs and tree crops
A combination of agriculture, animal husbandry and RNA combined with migration labor. The 4 pilots are deficit areas in cereals, but participating households have granaries that can feed year round, except in dry years.

On the basis of which criteria and/or indicator(s) (not related to The Strategy) the proposed practice and corresponding technology has been considered as 'best'?

Up till now the impact of RNA is only described in vague terms, like beneficial for agriculture, animal husbandry and ntfp's, but hard evidence is lacking. This has to do with the fact that products are many, mostly for household use, units of prive and volume, weight are informal and RNA is used indirectly, via agriculture and animal husbandry.   Untill now mostly survey type of enquetes have been done, but the current research follows ten households each for a whole growing season during weekly intervalls.

Section 2. Problems addressed (direct and indirect causes) and objectives of the best practice

Main problems addressed by the best practice

Unclarity in revenues of RNA, also in regarding agriculture and animal husbandry. This unclarity means that agricultural policies for support are not properly roted in facts.|

Specify the objectives of the best practice

Increase insight in revenues of RNA and
also to develop policies

Section 3. Activities

Brief description of main activities, by objective

survey of ten households in 3 countries and organise 3 meetings to discuss results

Short description and technical specifications of the technology

a questionnaire has been developed by a consultant that also visited the 3 spots, did a base line and trained the enqueteurs. At the start the survey was discussed. Results were discussed after half year and one year.|

Section 4. Institutions/actors involved (collaboration, participation, role of stakeholders)

Was the technology developed in partnership?

Ja

List the partners:

SahelEco Mali; newTree Burkina Faso; CRESA Niger

Specify the framework within which the technology was promoted

  • National initiative – non-government-led

Was the participation of local stakeholders, including CSOs, fostered in the development of the technology?

Ja

List local stakeholders involved:

Local NGOs

For the stakeholders listed above, specify their role in the design, introduction, use and maintenance of the technology, if any.

Knowledge is developed by the participating NGO's but is aimed to be used for development of policy proposal and to approach civil servants and policy makers. This has to be done yet.

Was the population living in the location and/or nearby involved in the development of the technology?

Nee

Analysis

Section 5. Contribution to impact

Describe on-site impacts (the major two impacts by category)

With this method impacts can better be measured.

Impact on biodiversity and climate change

Explain the reasons:

Better land use increases the resilience of the whople production system, including itas environmental and climate aspects. |

Has a cost-benefit analysis been carried out?

Has a cost-benefit analysis been carried out?

Nee

Section 6. Adoption and replicability

Was the technology disseminated/introduced to other locations?

Was the technology disseminated/introduced to other locations?

Nee

Can you identify the three main conditions that led to the success of the presented best practice/technology?

No.

Replicability

In your opinion, the best practice/technology you have proposed can be replicated, although with some level of adaptation, elsewhere?

Ja
