Especificaciones

the use of the maps and atlases developed has provided info on best location for the N.P buffer zone, security and safety thinking in location of hurricane shelters (most in flood zone on coast), thus the use of these maps empowers the community to think in terms of mitigating and even adapting to unforseen natural and human induced problems, also in protecting their livelihoods and culture. |

Lugar

Dublanc village - SLM/SPACC synergy in community mapping exercise (westcoast of island)

Población estimada que vive en el lugar:

400.0

westcoastal zone of average rainfall between 50" - 100" annualy
protosols(beach, sand, shingle), smectoid clay soils, skeletal, young soils|
gentle to steep slopes in village(on westcoast), and steep to flat open areas in the interior (border with Morne Diablotin National Park)|

fishing, agriculture, civil and private sector employees|
the general income level within this community is spread out significantly between subsistence living (hand-to-mouth)to professionals in the public and private sector.
mainly private lands with part of the village bordering with the Morne Diablotin National Park (tallest mountain) to which a 'buffer zone' is being mapped under SPACC-SLM projects synergy.

based on the Millinium Development Goals - Poverty aliviation, sustainable use of Biological resources and capacity development; as members of the community where trained to use Global Positioning Systems (GPS's) of advanced quality to gather field data and later process those using Geografic Information Systems (GIS). those maps will later be placed at the village councils in the various communities to assisst them in future development planning. |

Land zoning (best location for infrastructure planning & appropriate agriculture/fishing areas)|Capacity development (use of modern GIS/GPS technology to produce Asset maps and vulnerability atlases by Extension officers and village members)|Sustainable use of Biological resources (appropriate zoning of fishing and agricultural areas)

It addresses the issue of appropriate location for infrastructure development and placement of soil excavated, also in the agriculture areas where is the best place for farmlands and farm access roads (types of crops which protects soil loss as this area is part of a watershed for numerous rivers), and best areas for the National Park buffer zone.|

Especifique los objetivos de la práctica óptima.

to provide a tool for Sustainable community planning (community empowerment in National decision making at local level)|Sustainable use of Natural resources |Capacity development|mitigation of land degradation and climate change induced hazards in the community|to create a Community Resource Management Plan at the local and National levels

Sección 3. Actividades

provide concrete data/info on location , types, physical status, etc. of Natural resources|
use of GPS equipment to gather field data to produce asset maps and vulnerability atlases.
use of community asset maps and vulnerabilty atlases to plan new location of infrastructure and public utility equipments and structures.
proper planning for new location of hurricane shelters, business enterprises, schools, hospitals/clinic, council buildings, churches, also how and what development should occur around rivers and streams that are present in that community. Best infrastructure for fishing and agriculture production |the Community Resource Management Plans will be used for infrastructure devel., natural disaster planning and zoning

the GIS equipment used: Terrasync-field software & Pathfinder-computer software; the GPS's used: Trimble Geoexplorer XH 2008 series and Trimble Juno SC series
The Juno™ SC handheld a durable, lightweight field computer that integrates an array of powerful features. Providing photo capture, cellular data transfer, and high yield GPS receiver with 2-5 meter positioning accuracy in real time or 1-3 meter postprocessed, the Juno SC is an affordable solution that will increase the productivity of your entire mobile workforce.
The integrated 3.5G HSDPA cellular modem provides high-speed internet connectivity worldwide. Your entire field workforce will be able to quickly and reliably access the data they need in the field—work-orders, map data, reference files, emails, and even the Internet. The Juno SC handheld also enables connections to networks and other devices with its integrated Bluetooth® and wireless LAN capabilities.

No

the local stakeholders provided traditional info on natural and physical assets/resources(present & past locations, status), helped gather field data, learnt to use the GPS's and provided some local resource management ideas to be incorporated in the Community Resource Management Plans at the local and National Levels, also they will have copies of the maps/atlases for the entire village to use. |

No

under SLM-SPACC(special project for adaptation to climate change)synergy-some greenhouses are proposed to help with irrigating agri-lands to increase production
hope to increase fish ketch through zoning area
lower loss of top soil and sedimentation on coral reefs through sustainable infrastructure planning and location
increase agriculture earnings from increased production
possible relocation of some infrastructure, example hurricane shelters that may be within flood zones.|
capacity of villagers increased
Buffer zone for National Park established
better fishing planning and location

we have done similar mapping in neighboring communities but went further by actually diving and taking fotos of the coral reefs against quarrying activities on westcoast.
buffer zone continues around the perimeters of the National Park into other villages

in that the planning of appropriate locations for hurricane shelters, for example, would help mitigate on the quantity of natural and physical resources lost (including human lives)|
with the construction of the greenhouses in the interior for irrigating crops and drinking water for livestock, helps farmers adapt to extreme dry conditionss which increases every year since 2005|
yes in that it gives info on location, types, quantity, sex, habitat info, etc. on the Flora & Fauna Sp's we encounter and the Resource Management Plans would include how to address the Natural/Biological resources and the problems which may exist.|

¿Se ha elaborado un análisis costo-beneficio?

Sección 7. Enseñanzas

En relación con los recursos humanos

positive to have stakeholders aware of project and programs to increase participation|incentives are essential to increase participation and interest in processes|involving the local governments and villagers increases our National capacity levels in Community resource management and planning (at local level)

En relación con los aspectos financieros

good and timely planning avoids setbacks and loss of time in executing programs

En relación con los aspectos técnicos

aquisition of advanced technical equipment increases productivity and avoids waste of time in the field, example, older GPS units have very poor satelite reading and precision and shuts down during field work with lack of satelites|
