В Центральной Азии обширные пространства некогда плодородных пастбищ превратились в песчаную пустыню из-за того, что перестала соблюдаться практика их сезонного и ротационного использования, что привело к перевыпасу, а также из-за усиливавшейся тенденции к выпасу скота лишь одного вида.
Для повышения продуктивности пастбищных земель, улучшения их экологического состояния и сбалансированного использования климатических, почвенных и растительных ресурсов требуется восстановить систему пастбищного
кормопроизводства. Наряду с планомерным использованием и охраной пастбищ, она включает также мероприятия по их восстановлению путем создания многолетних агрофитоценозов на участках с деградированной растительностью. Из всех практик, применяемых для борьбы с деградации пастбищ в современных условиях в Казахстане, Кыргызстане и Туркменистана, а также  в горных районах Таджикистана и Узбекистана можно отметить традицию сезонного использования пастбищ: летне-зимние;весенне-осенние.
