Le Gabon est un pays accidenté qui repose sur le vieux socle érodé de l'Afrique. Son territoire, qui s'étend sur 267.667 km², est traversé par l'équateur et occupe en majeure partie le bassin du fleuve Ogooué, dont le delta débouche sur une plaine littorale que domine un arrière-pays de plateaux jalonnés de hauteurs (monts de Cristal au nord, monts du Chaillu au sud). La côte, rectiligne et bordée de lagunes, est entaillée au nord par de profondes rias (estuaire du Gabon).|
Le Gabon a un climat équatorial favorable à la grande forêt, à la fois chaud et humide (entre 1.500 et 3.000 mm de pluies annuelles) avec une courte saison sèche. La température moyenne est de 26 °C.|

L'interdiction d'exportation des grumes a poussé l'ensemble des exploitants de la filière à mettre en place des mécanismes leur permettant de transformer sur place la production autrefois exportée. Les tiges ne sont plus coupées dans le désordre, leur coupe obéit à l'approvisionnement des usines de transformation installées sur les chantiers. D'où un impact positif pour le maintien de la biodiversité dans les permis forestiers. |
