Section 1. Context of the best practice: frame conditions (natural and human environment)

คำอธิบายแบบสั้น ๆ ของวิธีปฏิบัติที่ดีที่สุด

On the background of current climate change for mitigation and adaptation to the mentioned process, one of the real active measures is to move to manageable water consumption for the purposes of rational use of water resources. From the management point of view water resources of Kakheti region are the important and  interesting to proceed to the controlled use of water and to estimate water deficit or excess according to its requirements.
For this purpose created geographical information system (GIS) of Kakheti water resources; Inventoried al kind of water objects (springs, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, irrigation schemes); Collected data on water use; Collected of data on land use, etc. GIS of Kakheti will be used in future as a basis for introduction of contemporary water resources management technique.
The project giving possibility to receive the real picture of quantitative characteristics of water resources available in Kakheti; to create GIS data bases and thematic maps of water resources that will make it possible to control and plan regional economy. |

สถานที่

Kakheti District(Eastern Georgia)

คำอธิบายแบบสรุปของสภาพแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติในพื้นที่

Alluvial, carbonate, salty, brown, grey forest, black, etc.
The lowest point of the region is 90 m (sought-eastern part of the region), highest - 3500 m (northen part).
The area of the region is 12200 km2.  The density of rivers network is 0,45 km/km2.   |
The climate is dry subtropical. The region tends to desertification. According to the forecast  (The 2nd National Climate Bulletin), at the end of  21st century in the southern part of Kakheti (Dedoplostskaro District) it is expected decrease of hydrothermal coefficient from 1,1 to 0,7, which will shift the region’s climate from subtropics into very dry category. The influence will be spread along the entire territory of Kakheti. |

Prevailing socio-economic conditions of those living in the location and/or nearby

Agriculture

On the basis of which criteria and/or indicator(s) (not related to The Strategy) the proposed practice and corresponding technology has been considered as 'best'?

Geographical information system (GIS) of Kakheti water resources will be used in future as a basis for introduction of contemporary water resources management technique.

Section 2. Problems addressed (direct and indirect causes) and objectives of the best practice

Main problems addressed by the best practice

The scarcity of hydrometeorological observations data after the 90-ies of 20th  century.

Section 3. Activities

คำอธิบายแบบสรุปของกิจกรรมหลัก ตามวัตถุประสงค์

Conversion the data to digital format
Transformation of GIS base for the project tasks requirements

Section 5. Contribution to impact

Describe on-site impacts (the major two impacts by category)

More rational use of water resources and measures against water losses
Reduced migration of local population from the area.
The project results will help to establish and develop tight bonds between different water users, will improve transparency of water resources management,  that will have positive results for the economy and social environment of the country.|

Impact on biodiversity and climate change

Explain the reasons:

Water is a vital element of our environmental essential for existence of all living species human beings inclusive.  On the background of current climate change for mitigation and adaptation to the mentioned process, one of the real active measures is to move to manageable water consumption for the purposes of rational use of water resources.|
